Core Lumen Consulting

Backend code review and refactoring for teams stuck with fragile services, unclear ownership, and production incidents that trace back to the same modules.

We run technical assessments, advisory sessions, and scoped implementation engagements. Scope and fees are agreed after inquiry — nothing is sold as a fixed package on this site.

Problem-led

When shipping features keeps breaking the same backend paths

Queues stall, database locks appear under normal load, and every deploy feels like a gamble. Teams often respond with more logging or another wrapper library instead of reading the modules that actually move money or data.

Core Lumen Consulting works on the service layer, persistence boundaries, and refactor plans that respect your release calendar. We do not sell generic “digital transformation”; we read the repositories you point us at and document what is unsafe, opaque, or expensive to change.

Engagements start with an inquiry. We confirm whether an assessment, a working session, or a bounded implementation slice fits before we discuss timing and cost.

Assessments combine repository reading, runtime questions, and written findings you can share with engineering leadership.

Refactoring without a written risk map is how teams reintroduce the bugs they meant to remove.

Ways we can help

Technical assessment

Structured review of backend services, data access patterns, and test gaps. Deliverable: prioritized findings with suggested sequencing.

Advisory sessions

Focused working meetings on architecture decisions, module boundaries, or a refactor cut-line. Hours scoped after we understand the repo shape.

Scoped implementation

Hands-on refactoring within agreed modules — extraction, typing, test harnesses, or performance fixes — with checkpoints you approve.

What we look for in backend code

Transaction boundaries that leak across handlers, implicit shared state, N+1 query paths, and error handling that hides partial failures. We trace these against how your team actually deploys.

Reviews include concrete file references and suggested change sets sized for your sprint capacity. We flag security-sensitive areas for your specialists rather than guessing at compliance outcomes.

Questions teams ask before booking

Do you need production access?

Not for an initial assessment. Repository access and architecture diagrams are enough to start. Runtime access is discussed only if you want profiling or incident-linked review.

Which stacks do you cover?

We focus on backend services — APIs, workers, data layers — in languages your team already uses. Tell us the stack in your inquiry so we can confirm fit.

How are fees set?

After we understand scope. Assessments, advisory hours, and implementation slices are quoted separately. Nothing on this site is a checkout price.

Where are you based?

We work from Midrand, Gauteng, with remote delivery across South Africa. On-site working sessions can be arranged when scope requires it.
